About Us

Founded in 2003, Davis WoodScapes specializes in landscape design and  landscape construction.  As the name suggests, woodworking is another interest of our business.  The design and construction of custom landscape structures will always be one of the unique traits of our landscape construction company.

 Landscape Experience:
I went to Rochester Community and Technical College and received my A.S. degree in Horticulture in 2003.  Andy Masterpole, the landscape design instructor at that time (currently with Yaggy Colby Assoc. Inc.) inspired me to become a landscape designer. From 2002-2007, I worked at two of Rochester’s larger landscape nurseries as a member of the installation crew, as well as a job foreman. This experience gave me a great understanding of the project schedules, costs, and complexities. In 2008, I became a member of the design team with my former employer. It was a very memorable season, during which I drew over 200 landscape plans using a new CAD software specifically designed for the landscape industry.

The horticulture industry was kind of an easy choice. I grew up working on a family farm 30 miles south of Rochester, so horticulture/agriculture is deeply rooted in me. As everyone in Minnesota’s landscape and horticulture industry knows, this is a seasonal career. During the off-season, I work in a variety of other construction trades.

Woodworking Experience:
About 10-12 years ago I started taking an interest in all types of woodworking. My specialty is in custom outdoor structures and furnishings, such as arbors, pergolas, planters, and potting benches. On the other hand, I have experience as a cabinet maker and trim carpenter. I enjoy combining the two by putting the same methods of joinery and fastening used with cabinetry into my outdoor projects. Because of their consistency in quality and stability, I prefer the workability of cabinet grade hardwoods and plywood over any dimensional lumber. However, no completed indoor project is as satisfying to me as seeing a western red cedar arbor or pergola standing in a well-designed backyard landscape.

Please Note
Currently we are not a licenced contractor in the state of Minnesota.  Landscapers are not required to be licensed with the state.  It is not recognized as a “trade” by the Dept of Labor & Industry.  However, to apply for a required building permit with a city or county for structures such as decks, pergolas and arbors you must be a licensed contractor because these structures may require footings which must be inspected prior to construction.  While WoodScapes is able to design theses structures, we currently subcontract the consruction to capable licensed contractors who are willing to work closely with me and my design.  It is on our “to do list” as a business to obtain a contractor’s license so that we may be a more complete construction company for you.
